Common Xbox Errors

Fix red ring of death - Click here! While the 3 red lights or red ring of death (RROD) error is the most common fault of the Xbox 360 other errors do occur. I have outlined some of the most common errors below:

E74 Error

The E74 error indicates that a general hardware failure has occurred. The E74 error occurs when the lower right quadrant of the ring piece indicator flashes red and displays an error message in multiple languages. The message reads “E74 System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support”.

Note: In April 2009 Microsoft announced that the E74 error is now covered in the 3 year extended warranty. If you paid for out of warranty repair during this time Microsoft will refund you the money. Check with Microsoft if you have not received your refund.

No Video

No video on Xbox 360 is evident by a blank or static video output with no flashing red lights and proper video output. Sometimes this error is preceded by irregular saturation of colors such as green or red.

Xbox Freezing

Freezing occurs when the screen has strange, spontaneous graphical problems in the middle of game play, including checkerboard or pinstripe patterns. The sound is also frozen or changed to static. These problems continue to occur until eventually your console experiences hardware failures.

Red Ring of Death

The Red Ring of Death, which is also known as RROD and 3 red lights is caused due to overheating and results in the Xbox 360 console experiencing general hardware failure. More information on RROD can be found on the Red Ring of Death page on this website:

Red Ring of Death

All of the above errors are common to the Xbox 360 with some reports suggesting in excess of 30% of consoles suffering from at least one of these malfunctions. If one of these errors does occur I suggest that you contact Microsoft in the first instance as a repair may be covered in your warranty for free. Unfortunately in most cases you have to wait 4-6 weeks to get your Xbox 360 back and even when you get it back it will more than likely be a refurbished console.

If your warranty has expired then sending your Xbox for repair will costs you a lot of money. If you don’t want to waste time and money than I suggest you purchase the below repair guide which shows you how to fix your Xbox 360:
